Intermediaries

All intermediaries for chicken, turkey and pork may participate in the Animal Welfare Initiative. They act as links between abattoirs, retailers and gastronomy partners.

Conditions of participation

With the introduction of the identity concept for pork in the third programme period, intermediaries for pork have come to play a decisive role for the first time. Intermediaries now need to negotiate price premiums for identified goods for both poultry and pork to reach bilateral agreements with abattoirs on one hand and retail and gastronomy partners on the other.

Audits

Intermediaries are subject to annual audits to ensure that only goods sourced from animals from certified farms are awarded the Animal Welfare Initiative seal. Auditors check goods for both identity and correct labelling based on the catalogue of requirements for the meat sector. Click here for the catalogue of requirements for the meat sector.
